The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science has a Statement on Digital Data Management that focuses on sharing and preservation of digital research data. The DOE Biological and Environmental Research (BER) program has general Requirements and Guidance for Digital Data Management. Additional data management requirements may be specified in the Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs). Please contact BER if you have questions about these requirements.
All proposals submitted to the Office of Science for research funding must include a Data Management Plan (DMP).
DOE ESS (TES/SBR) Proposals
If you are considering storing data with ESS-DIVE as part of the DMP for a DOE ESS (TES/SBR) proposal, you should:
- Review the ESS-DIVE contributor terms of use.
- At this point, you can include ESS-DIVE as part of your DMP. You do NOT need a letter of support from ESS-DIVE for ESS proposals.
Other Proposals
If you wish to use ESS-DIVE for a non-ESS proposal, first contact ess-dive-support@lbl.gov to request to store data. We consider archiving data not funded by the DOE ESS program on a case-by-case basis. The review process can take time so contact us as early in the proposal development process as possible. All data submissions must conform to the ESS-DIVE contributor terms of use.
Data Management Plans
We are unable to assist with creating DMPs for any proposal. Refer to some useful data management resources below for assistance with DMPs.

DMP Tool – A service offered by the California Digital Library to create, review and share data management plans that meet institutional requirements.
