The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Environmental Systems Science Data Infrastructure for a Virtual Ecosystem (ESS-DIVE) is a data repository for Earth and environmental science data. ESS-DIVE stores and publicly distributes data from observational, experimental, and modeling research funded by the DOE’s Office of Science under its Subsurface Biogeochemical Research (SBR) and Terrestrial Ecosystem Science (TES) programs within the Environmental Systems Science (ESS) activity.

The mission of ESS-DIVE is to preserve, expand access to, and improve usability of critical data generated through DOE-sponsored research of terrestrial and subsurface ecosystems in support of the DOE’s efforts to address some of society’s most pressing energy and environmental challenges.

ESS-DIVE stores diverse data from multidisciplinary Earth sciences, including hydrology, ecology, climate, geology, geophysics, geochemistry, and microbiology. By making ESS research data easily accessible, ESS-DIVE has the potential to advance the scientific understanding and prediction of hydro-biogeochemical and ecosystem processes that occur from bedrock through soil and vegetation to the atmospheric interface. ESS-DIVE is funded by the Data Management program within the Earth and Environmental Systems Science Division under the DOE’s Office of Biological and Environmental Research program (BER), and is maintained by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
