Using and Citing ESS-DIVE Datasets
Data Usage Licenses
All public datasets in ESS-DIVE are shared openly under one of two data usage licenses: Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License or the CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication license. Metadata will always be available under Creative Commons Public Domain.
Here are brief descriptions and links to the full terms of use for these licenses:
Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY 4.0) requires that the data package be cited by anyone using the data.
Creative Commons Public Domain (CC BY 1.0) dedicates the data to the public domain without restriction.
Data Citation Guidance
Datasets are valuable research contributions that should be cited to ensure that authors receive credit for producing and curating data.
When using data from a published ESS-DIVE dataset, we recommend formally crediting the authors of that dataset by providing a full citation in the references section of any published papers regardless of the usage license. However, depending on the data usage license (see below) citing the data package is usually a legal requirement. Avoid exclusively citing datasets in the Acknowledgements or in Supporting Information of a paper without including them in the bibliography, as it will then not be counted in citation metrics.
ESS-DIVE provides a formatted citation for each dataset at the top of its landing page; simply click the “Copy Citation” button in the upper right portion of the page. You may need to revise the formatting of the citation to match specific journal requirements.
When citing a dataset that is associated with a published paper, cite both the paper and the dataset. The associated paper can be found in the “Related References” field in the dataset metadata.
